Fundraisers' 3 day W2W challenge
On 26 June 2009, a group of 55 fundraisers for the St. James's Place Foundation will be setting off from Walney
Island for a 3 day ride to Sunderland. The W2W route will be a challenge for many, but with support from cycle
routes holiday company Holiday Lakeland Cycling - especially David Noblet's fantastic tea and cake stops,
there' ll be no stopping them up Bigland Hill, and then spinning all the way to Roker Pier.
Twelve months ago, a group of 40 fundraisers cycling the C2C raised over £82,000 for the St. James's Place
Foundation. This included a pound for pound matching donation by St. James's Place Wealth Management. It's
hoped this year that even more can be raised. The Foundation funds a range of charities in the UK and abroad
running projects for the direct benefit of physically disabled children, those challenged by a mental condition
and those with a life threatening or degenerative illness.

M6 bridge works
Please note the dates for these works have been amended
Powson Bridge, which crosses the motorway between Kendal and the Lune Gorge (mile marker 50 on the Walney to
Wear Cycle Route Map), will be closed to vehicles from 1st to 29th June
29th June to 26th July 2009
for waterproofing and resurfacing work. Cumbria County Council have however helpfully negotiated continuing access
for cyclists and pedestrians with the Highways Agency, subject to checking with the on-site contractor first.
This may mean waiting a few minutes to let them clear any obstructions before crossing, and cyclist should
dismount to do so. There'll be a signed diversion for vehicles.
Bede inspires cycle artwork
Sunderland City Council are creating a major new artwork to mark the end of both the W2W and C2C routes for
Summer 2009. Liverpool based artist Andrew Small has designed a large granite monolith for the seafront promenade,
which will frame Roker Lighthouse. The mirror-polished finish, reflecting surroundings and people nearby, will
have star constellations etched into the surface. The work has been inspired by ideas relating to Bede, Europe's
greatest 8th Century scholar, who calculated the motion of the Sun and the Moon to set the date of Easter, the
method that's still in use today. Wearmouth-Jarrow, is the home of Bede and the UK's nomination for World Heritage
Site status in 2010. More artwork and landscaping works between Wearmouth Bridge and the beach at Roker are also
underway, together with the installation of interpretation signs and cycle parking.
