Train
services
Travelling by train would be our preferred way of getting both
to and from the route. If you were to leave a car in Barrow-in-Furness
for example, it’s a lengthy journey back there from Sunderland.
Train services leave the West Coast
mainline at Lancaster and Carlisle
for Barrow and join the East Coast mainline at Newcastle from Sunderland.
There are also stations at Ulverston, Grange-over-Sands, Kendal,
Oxenholme, Kirkby Stephen, Bishop Auckland and Durham, and for
the Whitby option, at Darlington, Great Ayton, Danby and Whitby
itself.
Virgin,
TransPennine
Express,
Northern Rail and
GNER seem to be
the principal train operators and they all carry bicycles, albeit
in limited numbers. Northern Rail for example has just two spaces
on their trains and these are available on a first come, first
served basis. The other operators require reservations to be made
in advance but at no charge. The
National
Rail Enquiries website
has more details about this (click-on Passenger Services and then
Cyclists) and a Quick Journey Planner facility. Alternatively you
can call National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 (Lo-call) and
ask at your local staffed station.
